It's time for a fresh approach ....

Strawberry have partnered with Kestrel Consulting to provide a unique staff development programme that can aid learner retention and achievement. Kestrel Consulting hold the exclusive rights in Europe for Thinking Maps, developed in the US by Dr David Hyerle and in use in schools and education providers throughout the world.

Over the last five years they have trained over 30,000 teachers and dozens of LEA personnel providing delivery techniques that allow greater learner stimulation through a more visual form of learning. These are particularly useful for learners with poor reading and writing skills. This opportunity is now available to the Further Education sector exclusively through Strawberry and allows providers to:

  • Maximise retention and achievement rates, a critical element during the 'contestability' process in 07/08
  • Increase fee income by becoming accredited centres and delivering the training to local schools, employers and training providers
  • Improve link ups with local schools
  • Develop a structured 14 - 19 learning process
  • Cater more effectively for learners with poor reading and writing skills
  • Become an accredited centre through Exeter University.

Kestrel Consulting deliver these programmes through a team of experienced education consultants, many who have held, or still hold, senior posts within schools and education centres. Regular national conferences and regional workshops, bring together internationally recognised experts in this field, including Dr David Hyerle (US), Gill Hubble (NZ), Margaret Lucey (ROI) and Lisa Treacy (NI).

In the UK, Kestrel Consulting work closely with Professor Bob Burden who heads The Centre for Cognitive Education at Exeter University. Together they have developed a whole-school approach to the teaching of thinking and centres can now apply to be recognised by the university.

The tools and skills on offer are as useful in Further Education, Higher Education and business as they are in schools. Feedback from tutors of Modern Apprentices demonstrates that these techniques have made a significant difference to the quality of trainees writing.
