So, you’re ready to move on….?

At the start of a New Year, we often start to think of pastures new and where we want our careers to go? Therefore, we thought it would be helpful to put together some Who, What, Why, When and How points to hopefully help with this forward planning!

Who should I join?

Upon investigating the employment market, it is very easy to get distracted by all the options and opportunities out there! You need to spend time to focus on the type of company you would like to work for – initially, you could ask yourself what is most important to you in terms of a potential employer? This could be the size of company, security offered, culture, industry specialisation, etc. When you are clear re your priorities, it will give a recruiter like Strawberry the opportunity to identify a potential list of possible suitors!

What type of position is best for me?

We are currently in a candidate driven market and there are lots of options out there; not only lots of different types of roles, but also different engagement types, too. For example, a more ad hoc flexible type of role might be better for you to fit in around other commitments – or you might prefer the variety of a field based role to that of an office based position. If it is an office based position that you require, then travel time might be the main issue. If this is the case, then there’s no mileage in applying for roles with say a higher salary, but will ultimately necessitate more hours sat behind the wheel. The key here is to be honest with yourself and set realistic aspirations that are achievable – and be prepared to evidence to any prospective employer why you are a good fit for any prospective role.

Why do I want to move?

What are your reasons for leaving? I appreciate there could be a number of reasons, but it is important you identify your own specific motivating factors. We could be talking redundancy, lack of career development, low salary, logistics of travel, employer not investing in staff (creating extra work pressure), workplace culture, etc. Whatever the reasons are for you – it is essential you are clear re the solution you are seeking? Furthermore, this is also especially useful should it be that you secure a new position and your employer tries to ‘buy’ you back! If you have done this right, you will be able to refer easily to the reasons that prompted your initial thought process.

When should I start to look?

Well, there’s no time like the present! The fact that you have visited the Strawberry website and are reading this blog, tells me that you are ready to start job hunting. Most people are nervous re  change and making that first step is not always easy. However, please remember that looking for a new post is just that – looking! You are not signing on any dotted line just yet – therefore, you are quite free to search for jobs, talk to recruiters, meet with employers, etc. Obviously, go at your own pace, but don’t let procrastination get the better of you; yes, the right job is out there, but don’t let it get snapped up by someone else!
